Public Health Commissioning Support Officer – Ref 9623

Listing ref 417916a97c

We are looking for a well‑organised, self‑motivated and proactive individual to join the Commissioning and Contracting Team within the Public Health Directorate.

This role provides commissioning, contract and performance support to Public Health Commissioners and plays an important part in ensuring that commissioned public health services are monitored effectively and delivered in line with contractual requirements.

The postholder will work across a varied and busy portfolio, supporting day to day commissioning and contracting activity. This includes maintaining accurate records and documentation, supporting contract performance monitoring, coordinating information returns and supporting meetings and stakeholder engagement. The role will suit someone who is comfortable juggling competing priorities and able to work flexibly in a fast paced environment.

You will need strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the confidence to work with colleagues, service providers and partner organisations. You will also bring excellent organisational and administrative skills, enabling you to support work across the full commissioning cycle, including contracts, grants and performance reporting.

The role offers exposure to all aspects of public health commissioning and contracting within a local authority, providing an opportunity to develop experience and understanding of how commissioning decisions support population health outcomes.

Requirements for the Post

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate:

  • The ability to carry out commissioning and contracting support tasks accurately and efficiently, while recognising and adapting to changing priorities. This includes maintaining contract and grant documentation, preparing and issuing variations or extensions, and supporting assurance processes, including the coordination and checking of statutory and contractual information returns.
  • Confidence in using technology and IT systems to support high‑quality work, including Microsoft applications such as Outlook, Word, Excel and Teams, and the ability to use systems and spreadsheets to manage information and track activity.
  • The ability to use initiative and work with minimal supervision. As the role involves a degree of remote and independent working, you will need to be well organised, self motivated and able to manage your time effectively.
  • The ability to adapt to changing situations, remain calm under pressure and respond professionally to competing or urgent demands.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to communicate clearly and professionally with a wide range of people using different methods, including email, telephone, virtual and face‑to‑face. The role involves working with multiple stakeholders and partner organisations, sometimes within complex partnership arrangements.
  • The ability to work collaboratively as part of a team, supporting colleagues and contributing to shared objectives and outcomes.
  • Willingness to attend and support contract performance meetings and other related meetings, providing agenda coordination, note‑taking (in selected meetings), action logs and follow‑up, and supporting stakeholder groups to whom Public Health is accountable.
