Apprentice Environmental Health Officer

Starting salary £26,409 per annum (with progression as apprentices develop with experience and through their degree) | Full time, 37 hours per week (whilst studying towards BSc in Environmental Health)

Are you looking for a rewarding and varied career and the opportunity to study for a degree? We are looking for an Environmental Health Apprentice who will work within our multi-disciplinary Public Health and Community Safety service.

You don’t need any previous environmental health experience, but will need to demonstrate a willingness to learn, good communication and IT skills, and have grade 4/C or above in English and Maths GCSE (or other level 2 equivalent) and 80 UCAS points from level 3 qualifications. You must also meet the eligibility requirements for an apprenticeship and be in a position to start the course by early September 2025. The Environmental Health Apprentice will be based in the Housing Renewal Team. However, over the course of the programme apprentices will gain experience in all fields of Environmental Health and Licensing. You will have one day each week dedicated to studying towards your degree, with the remaining four days working in our busy Public Health and Community Safety service. The Service consists of the Housing Renewal Team, Food Safety and Licensing Team and the Environmental Protection and Community Safety Team.

As you learn and develop your skills and knowledge, you will help respond to complaints and enquiries, support officers on inspections and investigations; liaise with members of the public, colleagues and external agencies, and assist with proactive compliance work and projects. As you progress through the apprenticeship, you will start to manage your own caseload within your team, while gaining experience with other individuals and teams in the wider service.

The Environmental Health Apprenticeship runs over four years. On successful completion you will have gained a breadth of environmental health experience and a BSc in Environmental Health from the University of the West of England (delivered via University Centre Weston). This degree is accredited by the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH).

You will be joining a small, friendly and supportive team who will assist you to work towards your degree and with your work-based learning. You will also develop the practice-based skills that all Environmental Health Officers need as a basis for their careers.
