Advice on writing a Supporting Statement
A supporting statement is your opportunity to provide information to the recruiting panel on your experience and skills and how they are relevant for the particular role you are applying for. The best way to do this is by breaking down the essential criteria (and desirable if relevant to you) from the person specification and addressing each one separately, giving examples of where you have demonstrated the particular skill or behaviour. If you haven’t got examples for everything it is fine to refer to something similar that you have done.
The recruiting panel will use this information to shortlist candidates for interview. There is a lot of advice and guidance online if you have not written one before (just search on ‘writing a supporting statement’).
The supporting statement also gives you the opportunity to address things like why you are applying for the role and anything that is of particular interest to you about the role or the team/ department/ organisation.
Interviews will be held virtually via TEAMS (you will need access to a laptop/computer with webcam & microphone). You will be offered an informal pre-interview meeting with one of the panel to check your connectivity and your ID and to put you at ease before the formal interview.
We encourage you to write your application in your own words, sharing your real experiences and achievements.

Risks of Overusing AI
AI-generated applications can:
- Miss important parts of the job description.
- Sound generic and fail to show what makes you unique.
- Be unclear or misleading without careful editing.
- Include false claims about your skills or experience.
These issues can weaken your application and may be considered as misrepresentation.
Your supporting statement should be accurate, personal, and relevant. We verify qualifications and references, and false information may lead to withdrawal from the process.
If you need reasonable adjustments due to a disability, you may use AI or other tools to help with your application.
