Assistant Transport Coordination Officer – Ref 10533

Listing ref 5534fe4576

Permanent

37 hours per week

Are you a motivated and customer-focused individual with a positive, can-do attitude?

Would you like to join a friendly, supportive team that helps people access vital healthcare services across Devon and beyond?

We are looking for an Assistant Transport Coordination Officer (ATCO) to join the Patient Transport Advice Service (PTAS) at Devon County Council (DCC). PTAS works in partnership with NHS Devon to screen patient eligibility and ensure those eligible patients can access appropriate and safe transport to attend healthcare appointments.

What you’ll be doing

As an ATCO, you will play a key role in assessing eligibility for NHS-funded non-emergency patient transport. You will speak frequently with patients, carers, healthcare professionals and DCC colleagues to gather information and determine the most appropriate transport arrangements.

Where patients are not eligible for NHS-funded transport, you will provide advice and information on alternative travel options, helping individuals make their own travel plans.

Why Join PTAS?

Working within the Patient Transport Advice Service you will provide support to some of the most vulnerable members of our communities. Every day, you will help people overcome barriers to accessing healthcare, ensuring they can attend appointments safely.

What we’re looking for

You will need to have experience working in a busy environment, managing competing priorities and adapting to frequently changing demands.

You will need to be organised, resilient and able to work accurately under pressure, working with your colleagues to achieve the needs of the service.

Essential skills and experience include:

  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.
  • A professional and confident telephone manner.
  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to prioritise workloads effectively.
  • Good IT skills, including experience of Microsoft Teams, Outlook, Excel, SharePoint and the ability to learn transport management software.
  • The ability to assess information and make informed decisions.
  • Experience of working collaboratively as part of a team.
  • The ability to adapt to new IT systems and processes quickly.

You will use a variety of systems, including call management software and specialist transport systems, so being adaptable and able to learn multiple systems is essential.

Duties will also include tendering and issuing contracts, processing invoices and resolving queries from patients, providers or healthcare organisations.

Working Arrangements

PTAS supports agile working, combining home working with attendance at our office based at County Hall, Exeter, in line with service needs. This post will be required to work a 5 day week Mon-Fri, 9.30-17.30, we are not able to offer this post with compressed hours or alternative working hours, due to the current needs of the service.

During your initial training period, you will be required to attend the office daily. Once training is complete, there is an expectation of attending the office weekly, together with attendance for meetings, training and other service requirements.

Our offer to you

  • A supportive, friendly and inclusive team environment.
  • Agile working arrangements, combining home and office-based working.
  • Generous annual leave entitlement, increasing with service.
  • Membership of the Local Government Pension Scheme.
  • Access to in house learning opportunities.
  • Employee wellbeing support and access to occupational health services.
  • A range of staff discounts and employee benefits through Devon County Council.
