Apprenticeship, college or straight in? Routes into tech jobs

Three doors lead into the same room. Behind all of them is the same first year: tickets, faults, kit, users, the slow accumulation of knowing how things actually break. Tech is unusually forgiving about which door you use, because the industry has always cared more about what you can do on Thursday than what your certificate says. That doesn't mean the doors are identical, though. Here's each one as it genuinely works, how employers rank them and three questions that settle the choice for you.
The apprenticeship route
Tech apprenticeships are a proper front door rather than a consolation prize. In IT they're arguably the best-value route available to a school leaver. You're employed by a real company from day one - on the rota, earning, doing the actual job - while working towards a recognised qualification on paid time, with a trainer or assessor checking in and an assessment at the end.
The names are worth knowing so you can search for them properly. The most common entry standard for support and infrastructure work is the level 3 information communications technician, typically around 18 months, which splits into three options: support technician for helpdesk work, network technician for infrastructure and digital communications technician for telecoms. If code is your direction, the level 3 software development technician runs to a similar length. Security has its own level 3 cyber security technician standard. There are also level 2 foundation apprenticeships, one covering hardware, network and infrastructure plus another covering software and data, which sit a step below level 3 as a starting point. Above all of these the levels keep climbing, right up to degree apprenticeships where the employer funds the degree.
The money is honest but modest at the start. The apprentice minimum is £8.00 an hour if you're under 19 or in the first year of your apprenticeship, though plenty of tech employers pay well above it because they're competing for the same handful of good candidates. Two practical notes. Intakes cluster - lots of tech apprenticeships start in late summer or the new year - so a gap between deciding and starting is normal. The sensible move is to work anywhere at all while you wait. And read the small print on how the learning is delivered: some schemes are almost entirely on the job with online sessions while others include college days. Which suits you is exactly the kind of thing to know about yourself before signing up for eighteen months of it.
Who it suits: people who are done with classrooms as the main event but still want paper to show for their learning. The structure also forces a proper induction out of the employer, where a straight hire sometimes gets thrown in and left to swim.
The college and T Level route
The college path means a course first, usually alongside a part-time job if you're doing it properly. In England the flagship option is now a T Level, a two-year technical qualification that includes an industry placement built into the course. Three of them point straight at this category: digital support and security, digital software development and digital data analytics. Alongside those sit the long-established level 2 and level 3 IT and computing qualifications at sixth forms and further education colleges, plus computer science A-level if you want to keep university firmly in play.
Be clear-eyed about when the paper actually matters. For getting onto a service desk, it mostly doesn't - employers hire curiosity and communication at entry, certificate or not. Where formal study earns its keep is in the branches. Development, data and some security work lean harder on structured foundations. A few graduate-style schemes at large employers still ask for a degree. If your five-year picture involves writing software rather than fixing laptops, the college route is a reasonable bet on the second job rather than the first.
The trap is the college leaver with nothing else. A qualification plus zero evidence of doing anything is genuinely the weakest application in tech, because the industry can't see what you'd be like. So treat the T Level placement seriously, keep building projects at home and get a Saturday job that puts you in front of people. Do that and you arrive at nineteen with credentials, experience and a reference. That's the strongest opening hand of anyone in this guide.
Straight in
Apply, interview, start on the phones. No course, no scheme - the employer trains you because that's how support has always made its people. Every ticketing system, imaging tool and network quirk gets taught in your first weeks.
Who genuinely trains from zero? Managed service providers, first and foremost - they hire first-line constantly because it's the role people move up out of. In-house teams at schools, councils, universities, NHS trusts and mid-sized businesses. Field and installation contractors. What nobody tells you is how real the progression is. First line to second line inside a year or two is ordinary rather than exceptional. From there the corridors open: networks, security, cloud, infrastructure, development, team leading. Employers routinely fund certifications along the way, which means the straight-in route can quietly deliver the same qualifications as the apprenticeship route, just in a different order.
The trade-off is structure. Nobody makes you learn. You have to ask for the training, volunteer for the awkward job, take the ticket nobody else wanted. This route rewards the person who treats the service desk as a free education and gently punishes the one who just clocks in.
Who it suits: people who learn by doing, need earnings now or want to test whether they actually like IT before committing years to it.
How tech employers actually rank the three
Here's the honest bit no prospectus prints. For entry-level hiring, most IT managers weight evidence and attitude far above route. A candidate who built things, can explain them simply and stayed calm on a till for a year beats an unproven certificate nearly every time, whichever door they came through. Further up, the routes stop being interchangeable. Apprenticeship completers carry proof of trained competence plus real years on the job, which is a strong combination that travels between employers. T Levels and other college qualifications open the development and data branches more easily and keep university available. The straight-in crowd bank a time advantage - two extra years of real tickets while others studied - which shows up whenever a second-line vacancy appears.
The reassuring part: tech almost never punishes switching. Straight-in workers pick up apprenticeships with their existing employer. College leavers join service desks at nineteen. Apprentices go on to degrees their company pays for. The doors stay open behind you, which is not true of every industry.
How to decide
Three questions, answered honestly over a cup of tea, settle this better than any careers appointment.
Do you learn better doing or studying? If a classroom drains you, the apprenticeship or straight-in doors fit. If you like structured learning with people your age, a T Level plus a part-time job gives you both. Be honest rather than aspirational - the answer is already written in how you handled the last two years of school.
Do you need money now or options later? Straight in pays fastest today. An apprenticeship pays modestly while handing you credentials and experience together. College costs you earning time now to widen the field at nineteen or twenty-one.
And where do you picture yourself at twenty-five - fixing things, building things or securing things? Support and infrastructure grow beautifully from the apprenticeship and straight-in doors. Development and data lean towards structured study first. Picture the desk, then pick the door facing it.
Whichever you choose, choose it this month rather than perfectly. Every route in tech ends at the same first ticket and everything worthwhile in this industry grows from there.
