Engineering jobs explained: what you'd actually do all day

Job adverts are useless at describing what a job feels like. They tell you about competitive salaries and dynamic teams. They never tell you that your hands will be cold for the first twenty minutes, that the whole shift can be decided by whether one machine behaves, or that the best part of the day is often a five-minute conversation with someone twice your age who knows exactly why that bearing failed.
So here are three of the most common ways a young person actually enters engineering, walked through as they happen. Not the brochure version. The Tuesday version.
Maintenance apprentice on a factory site
You're in for half seven. Overalls on, boots on, safety glasses on before you go through the door onto the floor, because that rule has no exceptions anywhere and everyone will notice if you forget it once.
The shift starts with handover. The night team tells the day team what broke, what got bodged to keep production going and what still needs doing properly. Then the jobs board: planned maintenance tasks with dates on them, plus whatever went wrong overnight. Your morning is usually planned work with somebody more experienced. Stripping a pump, changing filters and belts, greasing points on a machine you're still learning the name of, checking readings against what they should be.
Then the rhythm settles. There's a job card, a set of drawings in a plastic wallet, a toolbox and a conversation about how you're going to get at the thing you need to get at. A lot of engineering is that conversation. Getting to the broken part is often harder than fixing it.
The hard hour is a breakdown. A line stops. Suddenly there's a supervisor asking how long, an operator who wants their machine back and your mentor kneeling on a wet floor with a torch. Nobody shouts at you, but the pressure is real because every minute costs the site money. Your job as an apprentice in that hour is simple: fetch, hold, watch, learn, don't guess. If you're asked to do something you're not signed off for, say so.
The bit nobody expects is the paperwork and the process. Permits to work, isolating a machine properly and locking it off so nobody can start it while your hands are inside it, signing things, writing up what you did. It feels like admin. It's actually the difference between a long career and a bad accident, which is why the supervisor is quietly watching whether you take it seriously.
What they're really assessing in your first months: do you turn up, do you ask before you improvise, do you tidy up after yourself and do you remember what you were shown last week.
Machine operator and setter in a machine shop
Different smell entirely. Cutting fluid, warm metal, a floor that's spotless in some shops and not in others.
An operator's day runs to a batch. You collect the drawing and the job sheet, load the material, run the programme and take the first part off for inspection. That first-off check with a micrometer or a vernier decides whether the next two hundred parts are right or scrap, so it gets done properly rather than quickly. Then the cycle: load, run, unload, check every so often, deburr, stack, keep the swarf under control.
It sounds repetitive and parts of it are. What makes it engineering rather than button-pressing is everything around the cycle. Tools wear, so a dimension that was perfect at nine o'clock drifts by eleven and you're the one who notices before the customer does. Setting is the next rung up: choosing tools, setting offsets, proving a programme, getting a job right from cold. That's where the skill and the money live and it's what a good operator is being trained towards.
The hard part is the last hour of a long batch when concentration goes and the temptation is to stop checking. Everyone knows that hour. The people who get promoted are the ones who check anyway.
The unexpected bit is how much maths you use without noticing. Also how satisfying it gets, holding something you made to a tolerance you couldn't have imagined caring about six months ago. Machinists develop a genuine pride in numbers. Give it a year and you'll be telling somebody at a party about a part they cannot picture, in a voice that surprises you both.
Fabrication and welding trainee
Loud, hot and physical. This is the one that looks most like the mental picture people have of engineering.
Your day starts with the drawing and a plan for how the thing gets built: what gets cut first, where it gets tacked, in what order it gets welded so it doesn't pull itself out of shape as it cools. Then marking out, cutting, grinding, clamping, tacking, checking square, welding, checking again. Grinding is most of the early job and nobody mentions that in the advert. You'll spend a lot of your first year cleaning up other people's work, which is exactly how your eye develops.
The hard hour is anything overhead or anything that needs to be right first time on expensive material. The unexpected part is how quiet the work is inside your own head. Under the visor there's nothing except the puddle and the sound. Plenty of people fall in love with the job right there.
What the supervisor watches: your prep. Bad welds nearly always start with bad preparation and a trainee who cleans the metal properly without being told is already ahead.
Myths against reality
Myth: it's all heavy lifting and dirty hands. Reality: some days yes, some days you're on a laptop looking at machine data or measuring something to a hundredth of a millimetre in a room cleaner than your kitchen. Engineering covers both extremes.
Myth: you need to be brilliant at maths. Reality: you need to be comfortable with practical maths and willing to double-check yourself. Nobody is doing calculus on a shop floor. Plenty of excellent engineers were mid-table at school maths and got good at the useful parts on the job.
Myth: it's a man's world and you'd stick out. Reality: the trade is still lopsided, no point pretending otherwise, but it's shifting and employers are actively trying to change it. What a workshop respects is competence. Be good at the job and the rest gets sorted out faster than you'd think.
Who thrives here
People who like a finished thing at the end of the day. If you get genuine satisfaction from something that works now which didn't work this morning, this trade will keep giving you that feeling for forty years.
People who ask questions. The best young engineers are relentlessly nosy in a useful way. Why that bearing? Why that speed? What happens if we don't? Curiosity is the whole engine.
People who can be patient with themselves. You will be bad at things for a while. Everyone is. The ones who last are the ones who can be a beginner in front of an audience without falling apart.
And honestly, who it doesn't suit. If you need constant variety and can't tolerate a repetitive stretch, a production role will grind you down. If early starts genuinely destroy you, a maintenance rota is going to be a fight every week. If you'd rather be talking to people all day than solving a problem with two other quiet people and a torch, there are better first jobs for you elsewhere. And if you can't bring yourself to follow a safety instruction you think is over the top, this is not your trade. That last one isn't about personality. It's about going home in the same condition you arrived.
