Through its specialist publications and digital products, ENDS provides trusted intelligence that helps professionals understand developments, navigate regulatory and market changes, and make informed decisions. ENDS Waste & Bioenergy (EWB) is a market-leading publication serving professionals across the waste sector, providing timely news, analysis and insight into the issues shaping the industry. The Role The Associate Editor will lead the daily news coverage and be the face of the ENDS Waste & Bioenergy brand, producing high-quality original journalism for a specialist professional audience. This is an exciting role for an ambitious news journalist looking to take ownership of a market-leading title. Combining hands-on reporting, editing, and industry networking, the Associate Editor will drive the daily news agenda, break exclusive stories, and build a strong personal and brand presence across the waste sector. Alongside EWB, the role includes editorial oversight of Mineral & Waste Planning specifically, playing a key role in strengthening both publications' presence and profile across the industry. Responsibilities Key Responsibilities Drive the daily news agenda for ENDS Waste & Bioenergy, writing, editing, and delivering high-quality, accurate, and original news and analysis Develop original, off-diary stories and exclusive investigations into the key trends and issues affecting the waste sector. Prepare and oversee the delivery of EWB's daily news bulletin and specialist editorial bulletins. Host and develop the EWB Burning Issue podcast, including identifying, approaching and interviewing relevant guests. Build and maintain strong relationships with senior stakeholders, industry leaders, decision-makers and other key contacts across the waste sector. Attend relevant industry events, visit sites and engage with industry networks to develop market knowledge, identify stories and strengthen the publication's profile. Work with EWB's editorial panel and wider industry contacts to gather insight and identify opportunities for relevant and impactful coverage. Manage and support the Editor of Mineral & Waste Planning, ensuring the publication delivers high-quality, relevant and engaging editorial content. Use audience analytics and other relevant data to understand reader interests and inform editorial planning and content development. Use data and insights from EWB's Plant Tracker to uncover original news leads. Monitor competitor activity, industry developments and emerging trends to maintain strong market awareness and identify opportunities to develop the brand. Work collaboratively with subscription, marketing and other commercial teams to support audience engagement, brand development and subscriber growth. Ensure all editorial content meets agreed standards of accuracy, quality, tone and style, and complies with relevant legal requirements. Apply strong editorial judgement when commissioning, writing, editing, sub-editing and proofreading content. Contribute to wider editorial initiatives and projects across ENDS and the broader business as required. Key Relationships Works closely with the ENDS editorial team, Editor of Mineral & Waste Planning, marketing, subscription and wider commercial teams, while building strong relationships with industry leaders, stakeholders, contributors and external contacts to deliver engaging content and support the growth and development of the EWB brand. Skills / Experience / Knowledge / Minimum Criteria Knowledge Strong background in B2B or specialist news journalism. A knowledge of – or demonstrable interest in – the waste, resource management, or broader environmental sectors. Strong news judgement and the ability to identify stories that are relevant and valuable to a professional readership. Solid working knowledge of media law, libel and editorial standards. Understanding of digital publishing and multi-channel content, including podcasts, webinars and other digital formats. Awareness of audience analytics and how data can be used to inform editorial decisions. Skills First-class writing, sub-editing and headline writing skills, with strong attention to accuracy and detail under tight deadlines. Strong editorial judgement, with the ability to identify, develop and prioritise stories. Excellent communication, interviewing and relationship-building skills, with the ability to build rapport with senior industry contacts. Ability to translate complex technical, legal or financial issues into clear, accessible news copy. Excellent time management skills, with the ability to consistently hit daily newsletter and publishing deadlines Ability to use audience data and insight to inform editorial decisions and develop content. Confident working across multiple channels, including digital, podcasts, webinars and events. Experience Proven experience working as a news editor, senior reporter, or experienced B2B journalist ready for their next step. A strong track record of breaking exclusive news and delivering high-quality news analysis. Demonstrable ability to build and maintain trusted relationships with a diverse network of industry contacts and sources Confidence conducting interviews with senior and high-profile individuals. Experience producing engaging content across multiple channels and formats. Ability to use audience data, analytics and market insight to inform editorial decisions and content planning. Experience managing or supporting the work of other editorial colleagues. Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced editorial environment, managing daily deadlines and competing priorities.
